Xoel y los X-Men es el resultado de una aventura cinematográfica planteada de manera poco convencional. Buscábamos rodar una película en la que la sensación del espectador fuera la de estar contemplando algo verdaderamente real, algo que apareciera ante sus ojos construido con la menor manipulación posible.
Me apetecía construir Xoel y los X-Men desde la improvisación y decidi que no tuviera nunca guión. Eso si, éramos conscientes de que para buscar esa apariencia de no manipulación había que manipular.
El proceso comenzó por elegir a los cuatro actores que interpretarían a los X-Men.
Después se desarrolló un argumento en el que se daba definición a esos cuatro personajes, prestando especial atención a su pasado individual y colectivo, se planteaba la situación en la que estos personajes se verían envueltos y se hacía una previsión de hacia donde podía discurrir el encuentro de los personajes.
Dedicamos un día a los ensayos. En ellos se reforzó individualmente la definición de cada uno de los personajes trabajando básicamente las fuentes de sus conflictos internos, las claves de los conflictos que mantienen con cada uno de los otros X-Men y su relación pasada y reciente con Xoel. Estas sesiones cercanas al psicoanálisis del personaje se completaron con improvisaciones de situaciones acontecidas en el pasado de aquellos personajes, otros encuentros de otras épocas. Buscamos fijar esas emociones y vivencias compartidas que forjan una amistad de años. Después se hizo una reflexión conjunta y una recapitulación de la experiencia hasta ese momento. Finalmente se fijó a nivel individual qué piezas de información maneja cada uno de los personajes. De modo que, como en la vida,
Al día siguiente fijamos elementos que debían centrar cada una de las tres partes en que se descompuso la situación global y se dio completa libertad a los actores para construir y reaccionar a lo que iba ocurriendo y a las sorpresas que tanto actores como personajes iban descubriendo.
La experiencia fue tremendamente rica y el resultado del trabajo creemos que tremendamente impactante. Xoel y los X-Men se presenta ante los espectadores como un pedazo de realidad capturado especialmente para ellos. Representado ante sus ojos como si ellos estuviesen también allí compartiendo el espacio con los personajes, haciéndote sentir que aquello te puede pasar a ti.
Xoel & the X-Men is the result of a new cinematographic adventure planned in a very unconventional way. We were looking forward to creating a film in which the audience would get the sensation of being watching something that was truly real and not manipulated.
We wanted to make Xoel & the X-Men up through improvisation and with no script but we were always aware that in order to get that feeling of little manipulation we had to manipulate a lot.
The process started by choosing four actors that would give life to the X-men. After that a plot was developed that gave life to these four men, paying attention to their individual past as well as the past they had in common, and taking it from there to see where the characters would meet and the situation would start to develop.
We spent a whole day for rehearsals, it was very important for them to pay close attention to each and every little detail and conflict of the characters being portrayed and their relationship with each other. These sessions seemed more like psychoanalysis than any other thing, they were achieved through improvisation of different situations and events from the characters’ past and past encounters that gave birth to their friendship through so many years. Finally after thinking and summarizing all of their experiences in common up until that moment, we set the individual level of knowledge and information for each actor to give to each character, that way, just as in life, they would be able to deal in their own individual way with the conflict before them. As we often see, not all the people involved in a relationship have all the facts nor all the information that they have is correct since objective information is just meaningless when it comes to relationships.
The actors had freedom to build and create reactions as filming was taking place based on this, and that way surprise each other as well as the individual characters with the hidden elements as they were being found out.
The experience was very fulfilling and we think the result is astonishing.
Xoel and the X-men, is presented to the audience as a piece of reality captured specially for them. Represented before their eyes as if they were also there sharing the space with these guys, making them laugh and also cry about that which could also happen to them.
